Are killer whales really so murderous?

The name killer whale certainly shows the species in a bad light. The orcas are of course quite intimidating animals with the fact that they are the largest member of the Delphinade family(dolphins) and they make a perfect example of an apex predator. But is the title and reputation truly deserved? If not, how did the species earn it and what is it really like? You will find the answer to these questions in the rest of this article.

Introduction to the species
Killer whales also known as orcas are some of the most easily recognizable marine mammals in the world. They are highly social and intelligent pack animals who live in groups of variable sizes. You can recognize them by their signature body populate every ocean on Earth and are one of the 5 known species including humans that we know for sure experience menopause. This means that female orcas can live even long after having given birth to their last calf. This may explain why killer whale populations become matriarchal in tough situations.Usually pods which are smaller groups within different orca populations have fluid leadership, but in times of need the oldest living female takes charge because she is the most experienced hunter of the pod.
The name killer whale is a bit misleading, perhaps whale killers would be more accurate as the name originally comes from orcas hunting different, often much bigger than them species of whales for example the blue whale the largest known animal to have ever lived. It’s made possible by unbelievably advanced hunting techniques that orcas use.Different pods seem to have developed their own languages which allow them to successfully communicate during hunts.Young orcas practice hunting on each other as a game. This makes killer whales some of the most advanced hunters on the planet and earns their spot on the top of the ocean food chain.
Killer whale attacks on humans
There are no documented cases of a wild orca ever killing a human. However there have been plenty of accounts of orcas killing and attacking people when placed in captivity. In the wild attacks do sometimes happen, but rarely and no fatal ones have been observed. The potential reasoning for that may be the fact that killer whales simply don’t see humans as prey. They also don’t perceive us as a threat so there is no reason to attack in defense. The situation looks different in artificial environments. Attacks happen frequently and there have been four documented casualties.Notably three of them by the same orca. The orcas name was Tillkum,he was a male orca who spent most of his life in SeaWorld Orlando an marine mammal park.
Blackfish is a movie from 2013 that follows the life of Tillkum and tries to find an explanation for his violent behaviour and showcases the consequences of keeping orcas in captivity. They are animals with incredibly complex social lives and are highly intelligent.Being isolated from their pod and kept in tanks way too small for them has catastrophic consequences for their behaviour. It makes them chase adrenaline in treating their handlers like prey. Marine theme parks are sadly infamous for providing poor conditions for their animals so maybe it would be safer for both humans and animals to advocate for treating animals kept in captivity correctly and ensuring they are given everything they need to function healthily
Endangered orcas and their importance to the ecosystem
Because killer whales live across the whole planet and in drastically different environments there are many different ecotypes of them. The three mains one are the:Resident,Offshore and Transient killer whales. The only orca population that is endangered right now are the Southern Resident killer whales. They live in inland waterways of Washington State and the transboundary waters between the United States and Canada and they are a crucial part of the ecosystem of that waters. As apex predators they regulate the populations of prey animals like seals and salmon. If the threats to the Southern Resident population like habitat loss and chemical pollution are not fixed the entire ecosystem could collapse

.Something like that could cause massive losses for the fishing industry and in turn result in a shortage of fish and sea foods in shops and restaurants.
