Freddie Mercury - a short biography
We all probably know the band called “Queen”. The lead vocalist, Freddie Mercury was not only a great songwriter and singer, but also had an extremely interesting life story which is the main focus of the film "Bohemian Rhapsody" directed by Bryan Singer.
Early life
Frederick Bulsara was born on September 5th, 1946, on the East-African island of Zanzibar. His parents were Bomi and Jer Bulsara and Freddie spent most of his early childhood with them in India. He started taking piano lessons when he was only seven. Who could have know where that love for music would take him?
Queen’s beginnings
When he moved to Middlesex with his family he joined a blues band, called Wreckage. At the same time Frederick was studying graphic design courses at Ealing College of Art. Later he got introduced to Roger Taylor and Brian May who were at the time members of another band called Smile. When Freddie joined Smile it changed into the band we all know - Queen. Later John Deacon joined Queen in 1971.
Artistry
“Bohemian Rhapsody” was released in 1975 and stayed on top of UK charts for 9 whole weeks. The song was almost never released, because of it’s unusual length. Mercury insisted on releasing it and it became one of the most recognisable songs. Soon after Queen gained popularity from beyond UK. In 1979 they topped the charts with the song “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. The biggest performance ever played by them was at Live Aid in 1985. In the mid 80s Freddie concentrated on his solo career, while still staying in the band.

Illness
In 1991 Freddie announced being diagnosed with AIDS. He passed a little over 24 hours aftrer the announcement.
Film
Rami Malek, the actor who played Freddie iwon an Academy Award for his performance, the movie got criticized for the sanitized presentation of Mercury’s complicated life, mostly his sexual fluidity.
