There are a lot of movies and books about robots and artificial intelligence (AI) getting out of human control and gaining power to rule the world. You might have heard about ChatGPT, which is said to be taking over peoples’ jobs and getting smarter every day. It causes many people to wonder, is it possible, that science fiction writers are predicting our future? And if so, how much time will have passed before we become the slaves of technology?
ChatGPT and the like
One of the most popular AIs used by millions of people across the world is ChatGPT. It’s a natural language processing tool (NLP), which means that it can understand human language and perform different tasks. It picks out the best answer for the question asked based on patterns of data it has been trained on. Books, articles and websites are some of the sources it has been taught on. However, there are many more AIs no worse than ChatGPT. For example, Watson – developed by IBM, is capable of tasks such as learning, speaking, hearing, and even has the ability to see. A different option is the Tesla Autopilot, which enables a car to drive, park and brake automatically. This AI is also capable of detecting accidents with 90% accuracy thanks to using cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors, and GPS.
What can the Chat do?
Open AI, the company behind ChatGPT, was mainly designed to have conversations with people. Its leading abilities are:
- Answering questions: it can provide information on various topics, including science, history, and current events.
- Completing tasks: it has the means to generate summaries of text, translate languages, and generate creative writing prompts,
- Engaging in conversation: ChatGPT can participate in regular dialogues on many topics, which makes it useful for chatbots, virtual assistants, and customer support.
What about its limitations?
Although it is a highly advanced technology it has its flaws as well. For instance, in March of this year, there has been a security breach and users could see search histories of others. It is anticipated that the creators used some personal data, which isn’t exactly legal, especially in Europe. Another major problem with ChatGPT is the fact, that it struggles with simple mathematics. It makes mistakes when asked quite simple questions regarding not only math but also different fields. It could be dangerous, as it is often used for medical advice.
Is there a serious possibility of ChatGPT taking power over the world?
AI language models like ChatGPT are tools designed to assist and augment human capabilities, not to possess their own motivations or ambitions. While AI technology has the potential to bring about significant changes in various fields, such as automation, decision-making support, and data analysis, it does not possess autonomy or the ability to take control of the world. The development and deployment of AI systems are subject to human oversight and regulations to ensure ethical and responsible use. Thus, we have nothing to worry about, at least not for now and can feel safe when it comes to AI gaining too much power to control them.
