Metallica: The Thunderous Journey from Garage Grit to Global Legend

Metallica is one of the most influential heavy metal bands in history that together with Anthrax and Slayer developed the subgenre of speed metal.

The band was created on October 28 1981 in Los Angeles, California, when the drummer Lars Urlich and the singer and guitarist James Hetfield got together via Lars’ LA Recycler newspaper ad. Soon after that they recruited James’ friend Ron McGovney to play the bass and Dave Mustain to be the lead guitarist. They took the name “Metallica” which was suggested by Ulrich’s friend Ron Quintana, who was brainstorming different names including “MetalMania” and “Metallica”.

The band recorded its first demo “No Life ‘Till Leather” and after several successful shows in the Bay Area they relocated. They convinced Cliff Burton to leave his former band and replace McGovey as the new bassist. In 1983 Metallica was pitched on an album deal by a metal merchant Jon Zazula, and the band travelled to New York to record their first ever album. Soon after Dave Mustain was replaced by Kirk Hammett due to his  problems with alcohol, drugs, aggressive behaviour and clashes with other bandmates. After being kicked out of Metallica he created his own band “Megadeth”. That same year Metallica recorded one of their best-selling albums “Kill ‘Em All” that includes hits like “Seek & Destroy”, “Whiplash” and “No Remorse”. The success of their first album was soon followed by the second one called “Ride the Lightning”. Classic compositions like “For Whom The Bell Tolls” intertwined with heavy songs like “Creeping Death”.

The band grew rapidly and was quickly taken by Elektra Records and Q Prime Management. In 1985 the band released its third and most successful album “Master of Puppets” which made its way in the top 30 album charts. Right when the band seemed to be unstoppable and on its way to become even more successful, an indescribable tragedy hit. During an overnight drive, the tour bus flipped, killing Cliff Burton. Shortly after the bassist's tragic death, Jason Newsted was hired to take his place in Metallica. In 1987 the band recorded a series of songs in Urlich’s garage in Los Angeles, which was later released as their EP titled “Garage Days Re-Revisited”. The band members turned the garage into a small studio space by hand themselves! In 1988 they recorded another album “...And Justice For All” which secured its spot as #6 on the US charts. In 1991 their self-titled album was released, often referred to as “The Black Album” by fans. It turned out to be a massive success, selling 16 million copies worldwide, earning a Grammy, American Music Awards and MTV. To this day “Enter Sandman” and “Nothing Else Matters” remain their signature hits. In just three years the band played almost 3000 shows, including a show with Guns N’ Roses.

Through the late 1990s and early 2000s Metallica began exploring more alternative sounds, which can be seen through albums like “Load” “Reload” and “St. Anger”. In 2001 Jason Newsted left and was replaced by Robert Trujillo. The band even got their own documentary “Some Kind Of Monster” made by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky. In 2008 they returned to a heavier, more metallic sound in “Death Magnetic” which was well received by fans, unlike “St. Anger” which was criticized due to its raw production style. Metallica’s most recent album is “72 Seasons” which was released on April 14, 2023.
