Predictions at the beginning of XX century on future

Updated: Jul 1, 2023

In 1900 a German chocolate factory named Theodor Hildebrand & Son started an interesting campaign: “Germany in the year 2000”. They made postcards predicting life in the future. They were very optimistic, as you can see below:

Those wings would make life so much easier, ahh... Imagine, you don't have to drive to school for 40 minutes in the bus. Instead, you just put on your wings and fly.

We have something similar to this projector and telephones. Our phones are much better, because smartphones don't have long wires and can do more, than just allow people to call.

It's hard for me to predict, how something like this could work. However, any way of controlling the weather is nice.

French artists like Jean-Marc Côté took part in a similar project in 1899, 1900, 1901 and 1910. Here are their predictions:

I would be scared to take something like this, but surely it would be a great experience.

Moves under the water are so slow. A croquet under the water for the long-term would be unsatisfying.

Why don't we have this??

Germans also predicted, there would be people flying with artificial wings. Their predictions differ however in shape. I'm curious, if it has any significance. If I had to pick wings to fly, I would choose fairy-like, very shiny and colorful. I'm surprised they didn't do this...

These predictions were very optimistic, but most of them didn't work out. The future seems to have gone in a different direction. It's funny, how people focus on huge things like airplanes and whale-buses, but forget about things like clothes. They thought that nothing was going to change in the clothing department, while there was a huge change.
