The art of expressing oneself in the world of fear

Author: Pola Galińska

What are subcultures?

According to the general definition, subcultures are groups of people who share norms of behaviour, values, beliefs, consumption patterns and lifestyle choices that differ to varying degrees from those of the dominant, mainstream culture.

In short, subcultures are smaller groups within a larger community. They share specific behaviours, values, features that can be easily distinguished from cultures they normally belong to. The genuine beauty of these groups is that they are a great example of how bravery of expressing oneself and belonging to the mainstream society at the same time, can tone in. Although this kind of lifestyle can be regarded as ideological, subcultural behaviours are actually a sign of a constant evolution. In this article, I am going to explore the topic of subcultures, putting emphasis on stereotypes concerning those groups.

What kind of hardships are subcultures supposed to face?

Now the main question is: Are there any difficulties though? Well, it might seem to be ridiculous, but subcultures still pass for subordinate groups. Truth be told, for many, terms such as “poverty” or “ethnic minority” are implicit in the term “subculture”. Due to this misconception, lots of people are labelled as the ones with a lower social status. Drug users, alcohol abusers have become a symbol of social pathology, while people who declare a different sexual orientation, are called ideologists or even deviants.

In fact, a lot of people do not even know how the whole mechanism of subcultures works. The ignorance of it leads to stereotypes and slanders. The most common myths concerning subcultures and their true equivalents are presented in a table below.

Myth

Fact

Subcultures aim at becoming a formal community.

One of the keystones of subcultures is their informality.

Subcultures tend to defy the rules of their mainstream society.

Subcultures usually do not represent an oppositional stance to the mainstream society. Instead of that, they focus on their own values and beliefs.

Subcultures are synonymous to families.

Subcultures create strong familiar bonds. However, they do not have to be a family. What actually makes their relations strong, is deep understanding caused by same core values and interests.

Subcultures refuse the principles of their mainstream society.

Subcultures acknowledge their connection to the mainstream society. At the same time, they develop their own values and interests.

On the basis of this table, you can deduce that subcultures are not only a casual group of people. It is a powerful bond that gathers together all the people with common interests, beliefs in order to give them freedom to express themselves. Not only is it a kind of cultural enrichment, but it can also be an opportunity to get familiar with others’ perspectives. And it is always beautiful when so many environments accumulate to show that, despite various features, they are a part of a bigger society, either way.

How can we avoid stereotypes about subcultures?

Stereotypes about subcultures have the same general principles as the ones about nationalities. In order to overthrow them, it is essential to make a deep research. It cannot be ruled out that you might be the one who belongs to a specific subculture, but is not aware of this fact.

Subcultures involve fan clubs too. This is something that should be taken into account when thinking of distinct communities.

It is worth mentioning that subcultures often have their rights. Therefore, it is important to get to know them better before you evaluate them. Active listening may help you detect some contradictions between stereotypes and truth. Additionally, you will gain significant views, perspectives which could help you comprehend the mechanism of a particular subculture.

Exploring subcultures might be a very building experience since you step into a completely different dimension of human psychology. It is worth noticing that every single person can actually belong to such a community without being conscious of it. While the idea of getting familiar with this topic may not sound convincing for some people, it would certainly bring you more advantages than drawbacks. After all, it is always a valuable experience when you get to know the world better, isn’t it?
