Anatomy of Cannes

Updated: Jul 1, 2023

May, in the world of cinema, can be characterized as the month of Cannes. The festival held there annually is one of the most prominent events in the calendar of international film. This year, the 76th edition of Festival de Cannes brought to the spotlight many productions from all over the world.

The most awarded movie from the festival was Monster from director Kore-eda Horikazu. The film was appreciated in two categories - Best Screenplay (written by Yuji Sakamoto) and the Queer Palm. Monster was also nominated for the Palme d'Or, which is the highest prize at the festival. The drama thriller follows the story of a teacher and schoolchildren who get into a fight. The conflict turned out to go much deeper than everyone expected and strange events take place as a result of it.

The grand prize went to Anatomy of a Fall directed by Justine Triet. The criminal drama is the fourth movie from the Neon company to win Palme d'Or, following the footsteps of Titane (2021), Parasite (2019) and Triangle of Sadness (2022). The intricacies of the death of a man and the process of discovering the reason for it cause problems to the relationships between his family members, which is the main focus of the plot and what the main character, the wife of the dead man, called Sandra has to deal with throughout the film.

Other categories included Best Director - awarded to Tran Anh Hung for The Pot-Au-Feu, Camera d’Or, awarded for best directorial debut, for Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell (directed by Thien An Pham), Short Film Palme d’Or given for 27 by Flóra Anna Buda, the Jury Prize which went to Fallen Leaves, directed by Aki Kaurismaki this year, and the Grand Prix was given to The Zone Of Interest by Jonathan Glazer. The acting categories prizes were awarded to Kōji Yakusho for Perfect Days (Best Actor) and Merve Dizdar for the film About Dry Grasses (Best Actress).

Besides the movies that thrived in France, there were also productions that were shown to the world outside of Cannes. For example, another part of the Fast and Furious franchise, Fast X, premiered in Rome. Starring the standard squad which includes the likes of Vin Diesel as Dom Toretto and Jason Statham as Shaw, this part of the story follows the events of the family being targeted by the son of drug lord Hernan Reyes. The film is one of the final chapters of the franchise, with two more movies said to be planned or in the works.

Another franchise production that premiered in May was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The third film from the Marvel saga once again revolves around Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Drax (Dave Bautista), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) getting in and out of trouble, saving the world in the meantime.
