November's Movies and All

November gifted film fans with quite a few salient sequels, as well as stand-alone productions. Both the cinema and streaming services have been enriched in the recent days. Ranging from the second part of Marvel's Black Panther to Steven Spielberg's new film The Fabelmans and the fifth season of Netflix's The Crown, surely everyone will find something for themselves to watch.

Ryan Coogler made his directorial comeback revisiting the Marvel Universe to continue the Black Panther franchise in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The movie pays amazing tribute to the late actor and star of the first part Chadwick Boseman in more ways than one. Starting at Letitia Wright's (who played Boseman's sister in the film, Shuri) premiere look to little Easter eggs in the movie itself. The plot follows the events after king T'Challa's death and the struggles of the Wakandan nation while dealing with a new enemy and a lack of their hero.

The returning stars like Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke and Martin Freeman made the sequel feel whole and connected to the first part, as well as contributed to the honoring of Chadwick Boseman's legacy as the Black Panther.

Another big production is Luca Guadagnino's (also known for Call Me by Your Name adaptation) Bones and All. Starring Timothée Chalamet as Lee and Taylor Russell as Maren, the film tells the story of the two experiencing the dark side of Ronald Reagan's America while on a thousand-mile long journey together. Despite their best efforts, they can't outrun their pasts and end up having to figure out if their love can survive.

Although the beautiful cinematography, the movie is not for the faint-hearted as it has been R-rated, mainly due to its strong, violent and very disturbing contents. Nevertheless, Bones and All was nominated for the Golden Lion for Best Film and awarded the Silver Lion for Best Director at Venice Film Festival 2022.

Steven Spielberg, said to be one of the best directors alive right now, also presented us with another one of his movies, The Fabelmans, which released on November 25th. The film is about Sammy (played by Gabriel LaBelle) who discovers a family secret and decides to experiment with filmmaking and its power of showing reality. The work is loosely based on the director's childhood, showing the character growing up in post-World War II Arizona. It won People's Choice Award for Best Film, but there aren't many critics' reviews available online just yet. The ones that are up, speak of the movie mostly in superlatives.

And finally, switching to Netflix, season five of worldwide famous The Crown, aired on November 9th. The part follows the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) during the period between 1991 and 1997 and has been confirmed to be the penultimate season of the series. The season stars Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana and Dominic West as her husband, Prince Charles.

November did not disappoint. There is something for everyone in this month's releases. Superhero fans, British history enthusiasts, and cinematography nerds will be satisfied with November productions. If not with the ones mentioned above, then maybe with Enola Holmes 2 (directed by Harry Bradbeer), Causeway by Lila Neugebauer, or My Policeman, directed by Michael Grandage. Either way, this month's films look very promising.
